Maple Courtyard House

A quiet Japanese courtyard house built around one Japanese maple. The double-height living room looks into an open-air courtyard of gravel, moss and stones, edged by a timber engawa. Upstairs, a glazed bridge and an open timber bridge join the two wings, so both floors circle the tree: a library with a long desk at the height of the canopy, a reading gallery and a tea lounge. Below, a studio desk faces the garden and a deep, low eave shelters the deck. Rammed earth, oak and washi lanterns.

Pacific Palapa House

Cliff-top house on Mexico's Pacific coast. A great oval palapa of palm thatch on round timber columns shelters a linen lounge and a long parota table beside a curved infinity pool. A board-formed concrete library with a desk opens onto the deck, a sunset terrace holds a daybed, and a walled entry patio with a fig, palms and a stone rill leads in through the zaguán. A garden path winds down the cliff to a mirador banquette, a morning desk, a bench by a still-water basin and a hammock.

A living room with a corner fireplace, built-in book niches and pocket sliders opens onto travertine terraces; a cane-shaded pergola holds a dining table for eight under rattan pendants. Below, a dry-stone wall drops to an 18 m overflow pool with a shaded daybed, then to an olive garden with a curved whitewashed bench. A white exterior stair climbs to a roof terrace with a cushioned banquette.
